CATFISHThe biggest and most powerful freshwater fish in Europe is the Catfish (Wels in German, Siluru in Spanish). While not native to the Ebro, the Catfish has been here for many years and fish over 2 meters are common. The population is huge and continues to grow. At the top of the food chain, the Catfish is increasingly viewed by fans of other species as a plague. To Catfish fans, of course, the Ebro is Heaven on Earth.
A hooked Catfish is alarmingly powerful and patently unforgiving. This means there is little room for error in the selection and preparation of equipment or the presentation of baits. Three methods of Catfishing are available:
If you prefer to bring your own gear, pay close attention to the quality of terminal tackle such as hooks and swivels. As stated above, there is no room for error here. Also, Catfish artificials are not simply larger versions of smaller lures. Catfish lures are specially designed to withstand the rigors of a 45 minute battle with 35 or 40 kilos of Catfish. They are also expensive. If you can’t find them, not to worry. At EBRO-TOTAL-FISHING, we have everything you need in our Tackle Shop. Unless stressed by sudden changes in weather or water levels, Ebro Catfish are generally active from March through October, though areas of greatest activity tend to shift geographically. At EBRO-TOTAL-FISHING, we constantly monitor the Catfishing in our area to stay abreast of where it’s hot and where it’s not. |
